Glitch Text Explained: What Zalgo Is and How to Use It Safely
Glitch (zalgo) text stacks marks on every letter. What it actually is, the four intensities, why 6 letters become 36 characters, and when not to use it.
Glitch text — better known as zalgo — is ordinary text with combining marks stacked on every letter, top and bottom, until it looks corrupted or possessed. It's not a font, not malware, and not a hacked app: every mark is a standard Unicode diacritic, the same kind of code point that puts an accent on é — just piled on thirty at a time. You generate it with a free glitch text generator, pick an intensity, and paste it into bios, display names, or messages. Used lightly it reads as creepy-fun; used heavily it becomes the dripping horror aesthetic that horror servers love. Used carelessly it wrecks readability, screen readers, and layouts — this guide covers what zalgo actually is, the four intensities, and exactly where to stop.

Make glitch text in three steps
- Generate the text. Open the free glitch text generator, type your word, and choose an intensity — light, creepy, medium, or heavy.
- Copy it. Tap the copy button; every mark travels with the letters.
- Paste it into your name, bio, or a message. The marks are ordinary Unicode, so every platform that accepts text accepts zalgo.
No app, no modification. The same word pastes as clean text anywhere that rejects it — the corruption is decoration, not damage.
What zalgo actually is
Every accented letter you've ever typed is two code points deep: a base letter plus a combining mark (é is e + U+0301). Zalgo takes that mechanism to its extreme — it stacks many combining marks per letter, from the block Unicode reserved for diacritics (U+0300–U+036F). A light zalgo word carries one or two marks per letter; a heavy one carries a dozen or more, bleeding above and below the line.
The name comes from internet horror fiction: "Zalgo" was a creepypasta entity — a chaos god whose coming is signaled by corrupted, dripping text — that became a meme in the late 2000s. The styling outlived the story: today "zalgo text" just means text ruined on purpose, and horror and creepypasta servers use it as their house style.
Two facts worth knowing before you commit a name to it:
It's deterministic. The generator picks the same marks for the same word every time — S̗̀h́̀a̵̖ḑ̗ó̧w̶̨ corrupts identically on every visit, so your name stays consistent.
It inflates character counts. Every mark counts toward field limits. A six-letter word at heavy intensity becomes 36 characters; H̶E̶ ̶C̶O̶M̶E̶S̶ at full weight is 43 code points for 8 visible letters. Discord's 32-character display name fits about five heavy letters. Budget accordingly — light intensity for anything longer than a word.
The four intensities
The samples below are live text — copy any of them straight from the page:
- Light — S̀h́a̖d̗o̧w̨ — one or two marks per letter, still fully readable, perfect for names
- Creepy — S̗̀h́̀a̵̖ḑ̗ó̧w̶̨ — the default; visibly wrong but legible
- Medium — S̵̗̀h́̀̀a̵̖̗ḑ̴̗ó̧͛w̶̨̖ — clearly corrupted, best in messages
- Heavy — S̵̗̗̀́h̶̴́̀̀ą̵̖̗͛ḑ̴̗̖̖ó̧̨͛͛w̶̴̶̨̖ — the full horror-drip; save it for short words and one-off jokes

Using it safely: four honest limits
Screen readers suffer most. A screen reader doesn't see "Shadow" — it sees letter, mark, mark, mark, letter... and reads every combining mark aloud or stumbles. Zalgo is the single worst styled family for assistive tech, so keep your real name, bio essentials, and anything functional in plain text, and confine zalgo to decoration.
Layouts overflow. Stacked marks extend vertically past the line height. Heavy zalgo in a display name overlaps the names above and below it in member lists. Light or creepy in names; medium and heavy for messages where a tall line harms nothing.
It never unlocks anything. Zalgo is ordinary characters — no platform treats it as special, and using styled text to slip words past a chat filter is a rules violation, as covered in our Roblox guide. The filter doesn't understand zalgo; neither will the people you're talking to.
Some surfaces trim it. A few apps collapse or strip long runs of combining marks in search results and notifications. Your zalgo name may render clean (marks removed) in some system surfaces — that's the platform protecting legibility, not a glitch in your copy.
Where zalgo works (and where it fails)
| Field | Works? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Display names | Yes, light/creepy | Heavy overlaps neighboring lines |
| Chat messages | Yes, all intensities | The natural home of the joke |
| Bios | Yes, light | One corrupted word, not the whole bio |
| Roblox display name | Yes, light | 20 characters — see the Roblox guide |
| Usernames and @handles | No | Plain letters only, everywhere |
| Anything important | No | Screen readers can't salvage it |
Ready-to-paste glitch ideas
- Horror server name: S̗̀h́̀a̵̖ḑ̗ó̧w̶̨ — creepy, still readable in the member list
- Message punchline: H̵̗̗̀́É̶̴̀̀ Ç̴̗̖̖Ó̧̨͛͛M̶̴̶̨̖Ę̴̨̗́Ş̵̶̖̀ — heavy, one-off, everyone gets it
- Light touch bio: z̀ál̖g̗o̧ — the corrupted word as an aesthetic accent
- Full send: d̵̗̗̀́ó̶̴̀̀n̵̨̖̗͛ţ̴̗̖̖ l̶̴̶̨̖ǫ̴̨̗́ò̵̶̧̖k̶̵̵͛́ b̵̗̗̀́á̶̴̀̀c̵̨̖̗͛ķ̴̗̖̖ — heavy, for the friends who'll screenshot it
Frequently asked questions
Is zalgo text dangerous or a virus?
No. It's plain Unicode text — combining diacritics stacked on normal letters. There's no executable anything in it; pasting it cannot harm a device. The worst it can do is make text unreadable and crowd a layout, which is a design problem, not a security one.
Why is it called zalgo?
From the creepypasta character Zalgo — a chaos entity whose arrival is announced by corrupted, dripping text in webcomics and forum posts from the late 2000s. The name stuck to the styling itself; today any text stacked with combining marks is called zalgo regardless of the story.
Why does my zalgo name overlap other names in the member list?
Stacked marks extend above and below the line, but list rows have fixed heights — so heavy zalgo bleeds into neighboring rows. Use light or creepy intensity for display names, and save medium and heavy for chat messages, where tall lines are harmless.
Do screen readers read zalgo text?
Badly. Each mark may be announced or garbled, turning one word into an unrecognizable stream. It's the least accessible styled family in Unicode — keep names, bios essentials, and any functional text plain, and treat zalgo as pure decoration for sighted readers.
Is zalgo allowed on Discord and Roblox?
Yes — it's ordinary characters, not a modification. Horror and creepypasta servers embrace it. The same rules apply as to any styled text: don't use it to bypass chat filters, and don't impersonate anyone. Our Discord guide and Roblox guide cover the field limits.
Corrupt something
Open the glitch text generator, type a word, and dial the intensity until it's as cursed as you need. It's free, runs in the browser, and needs no sign-up. For the opposite of corruption, the small caps guide covers the calmest style in Unicode — and upside-down text is the glitch generator's other resident trick.
